City and County of Denver’s Employer Partner is Making a National Impact

When Heather Terenzio, CEO of Techtonic Group, participated in an employer panel during the Ready to Work (RTW) Convening, she shared how her company’s partnership with RTW grantee City and County of Denver is advancing diversity in the information technology (IT) industry by expanding opportunities for non-traditional candidates such as women, veterans, and minorities.
Through Techtonic Academy, individuals who are not well-represented in IT are being paired with senior software developers for on-the-job (OJT) training. Techtonic Group recently became the first Colorado IT company to be included in the U.S. Department of Labor's official apprenticeship network.
Not only is the program making an impact on local long-term unemployed (LTU) workers, but it is also changing the way tech employers across the country train and hire employees. Techtonic Academy just landed funding from an education-focused private equity firm and national media are covering its successful model, which is being replicated across the country. About City and County of Denver
City and County of Denver’s Technology Employment in Colorado Partnership (TEC-P) is a regional, joint project that benefits long-term unemployed (LTU) and underemployed people on the Front Range and Western Slope in Colorado using collaborations between employers, educational institutions and job training programs. TEC-P, a targeted industry sector initiative, utilizes an industry- and employer-driven approach to develop career pathways, boosting employment in middle-skilled to high-skilled jobs. This milestone regional effort will help to expand Colorado's pipeline of talent by connecting nearly 600 LTU individuals with promising careers in high-demand industries. Establishing and growing partnerships, conducting outreach to local regions through social media, and their website, has contributed to the grantee’s success. Examples of strong partnerships include Boulder’s work with Techtonic and Level 3 Communications for work-based training.
